“Canon Pyon Road” Herefordshire

May 22, 2024

Canon Pyon Road, Herefordshire

Lewis Critchley Architects have been appointed to design a new self-build energy efficient family home in Herefordshire.   Following a successful outline planning approval for 4 homes, one was selected to be developed further for a private home.  Open plan living spaces and energy efficient features such as passive solar gain, a super insulated building envelope, triple-glazing, MVHR, solar power, battery storage and warm water underfloor heating mean the building qualifies for a high performing energy rating and ensure a low-maintenance home year-round. A sedum green roof softens the view from neighbouring properties whilst contributing to rainwater attenuation, increased biodiversity and thermal mass.

The concept was to allow the landscaping to blend and interact with the building, blurring their boundaries and rooting the building into its site.  A direct response to the site location, orientation, sunpath and views the proposed new dwelling response positively to this location.

The layering of the elevations and roof overhangs adds depth and animation, whilst the warm textures of buff brick and rich iroko timber adorning the façade allow the building to blend into its wild backdrop.  Simple but elegant design approach and use of a limited palette of natural materials was the brief from our client.  Inside, spaces range from the expansive kitchen, dining and entertaining area, with double height glazing drawing the eye out to the immediate landscaping. Top floor bedrooms nestled under the floating roof canopy provide beautiful outlook to the black mountains directly onto a rear terrace.

Our aim in any project is to design with passion, care and attention to detail. Our mission is to engage with our clients to give a positive working relationship and experience whilst bringing their aspirations to life.
