“Vineyard House” The Cotswolds

March 20, 2024

A contemporary brick addition to a Cotswolds house, inspired by its Georgian Frontage.

By Oxford based Architects & Interior Designers – Design Storey

The owners of a Georgian Farmhouse with its own Vineyard came to us with a clear brief: to enhance the kitchen by increasing the light and space and improving the connection of the house to its beautiful garden. We had a shared vision, that any alterations should stay true to the house’s unique character and spirit, while maximising the connection to the landscape.

This ambitious project involved extending the house along the southern elevation of the house to maximise the views of the garden. This created a sequence of spaces, each with a different relationship with the outside, culminating with a new dining room with corner glazing to direct the views, reconnecting the Georgian frontage of the house. Other alterations included the creation of a snug from the former dining room and the reworking of the internal layout to improve the flow and entrance experience into the new addition.

A new dining room and utility room bookend the addition and are constructed from brick the central section reads like a glazed link and provides light and access to the kitchen. The flooring runs seamlessly between the inside and outside further emphasising the connection with the outside. A linear patio wraps around the exterior of the building providing an area to sit, entertain and enjoy the views across to the vineyard, a green roof has the effect of continuing the landscape up to the building as well as fulfilling the client’s ambition to use green solutions where possible.

The interiors have been designed to reflect the Georgian heritage of the house and are paired back with robust and durable finishes that will last the touch of time with a contemporary feel. The green of the kitchen joinery was chosen to link the interiors with the gardens beyond, connecting the house to the grounds. The design of other areas include the introduction of panelling, exposed Cotswold stone walls, repairs to period features and painted joinery including a bespoke bench to provide a place to sit and reflect.

The material palette and detailing of the addition reflects the existing house; handmade bricks were selected to enable the addition to be coursed to match the existing Georgian façade, the colour was chosen to match the Cotswold stone of the older part of the house. This has the effect of the new addition seamlessly blending tonally into its context, providing a softness and subtlety that contrasts with the existing building. The owners of the house were delighted with the final outcome of the project and have enjoyed many long summer days entertaining friends and family and enjoying their beautiful garden.

Design Storey provided architecture interiors and landscaping design for the project as well as project management services throughout the build to ensure successful delivery of the project.

Client View

“We cannot recommend working with Design Storey highly enough. We contacted them with a very high level brief that we wanted to improve our kitchen layout, increasing the views and light to the garden. They understood exactly what we wanted to improve and had lots of ideas on how to do that. We loved the designs. All through the process Design Storey provided us with options on design, yet gave us clear views on what they thought.

This was so helpful, as we really valued their experience and expertise. Design Storey put significant effort in to ensuring that a detailed design was locked down. This investment of time up front set us up for smooth delivery of the project. Design Storey ran a thorough tender process to ensure we were able to source a high quality contractor. They then remained closely involved in the project throughout, with regular site visits and ongoing regular communication with ourselves and our contractor.

They made everything very low stress for us, and had an amazing eye for quality and detail throughout. We absolutely love the end result. We highly recommend Design Storey.”
